Miroslav Lajcak was appointed minister of foreign affairs for Slovakia in January 2009. He served as the director general for political affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before assuming his current role. Minister Lajcak joined the Czechoslovak Foreign Ministry in 1988 and began his diplomatic career in Moscow, serving through Slovakia's declaration of independence. He served as ambassador to Japan (1994-98) and was chef de cabinet to Jozef Moravcik, Slovakia's then foreign minister (1993-94), and again for Eduard Kukan (1998-2001). From 2001-05, he served as ambassador to the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Albania, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Minister Lajcak is a law graduate from the Commenius University in Bratislava and holds a doctorate in international relations from the State Institute of International Relations in Moscow.
