The Honorable Karl-Theodor Freiherr zu Guttenberg has been minister of defense of the Federal Republic of Germany since October 28, 2009. In addition, he is a member of Kulmbach District Council and has been a member of the German Parliament since 2002. Before becoming Minister of Defense, he was federal minister of economics and technology. From 2005 until November 2008, he was chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/Christian Social Union (CSU) parliamentary group in the German Parliament. From 2005 to 2008, he was chair of the CSU foreign policy expert committee. Since December 2007, Minister Guttenberg has been chairman of the CSU Upper Franconian District Executive. From November 2008 to February 2009, he was a substitute member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, a substitute member of the Defense Committee, and secretary general of the CSU. He has previously been the chairman of the German-British Parliamentary Friendship Group and is currently vice president of the Southeast Europe Society. Minister Guttenberg studied law and politics in Bayreuth and Munich and was awarded a juris doctorate in 2007.
