David J. Hayes is US deputy secretary of the Interior. He was nominated for the position after serving on President Obama’s Transition Team, heading the agency-review process for the Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture, Department of the Interior, and Environmental Protection Agency. Hayes works directly on Western water rights, federal land management, implementation of the Endangered Species Act, and issues involving the national parks and Indian tribes. Prior to joining the administration, Hayes was the global chairman of Latham & Watkins’ Environment, Land, and Resources Department. He also served as a senior fellow for the World Wildlife Fund, focusing on forestry and biodiversity issues. He was also a consulting professor at Stanford University’s Woods Institute for the Environment. Hayes previously worked at the Interior Department under President Clinton, serving as deputy secretary and counselor to the secretary.
