Varun Gauri is a Senior Economist in the Development Research Group (Public Services Team) at the World Bank. Mr. Gauri's current research interests include the enforcement and impact of legally codified social and economic rights, the political economy of government responses to HIV/AIDS, the governance of NGOs in developing countries, and the impact of AIDS treatment.
He has worked on and led a variety of operational tasks in the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation, including operational evaluations, investments in privately owned hospitals in Latin America, a social sector adjustment loan to Brazil, several health care projects in Brazil, a study of the decentralization of health care in Nigeria. Mr. Gauri has previously taught courses in health policy, bioethics, and education policy in the United States and Chile. He received his Ph.D. in Public Policy from Princeton University in 1996.
