Dr. David P. Mindell is the Dean of Science and Research Collections at the California Academy of Sciences. Before that, he was a Professor and Curator at the University of Michigan and its Museum of Zoology.
He has also written a popular science book entitled The Evolving World: Evolution in Everyday Life, which won the 2007 Independent Publisher Gold Medal award for Best Book in the science category. His research interests include the evolutionary genetics and systematics of birds, conservation biology, molecular evolution, genomics, rates of evolution, macroevolution, coevolution of retroviruses and avian hosts, and the evolution and phylogeny of viruses.
Mindell received his Ph.D. degree from Brigham Young University in 1986. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Tel Aviv University in 1986 and at Harvard University from 1987-1988. Prior to joining the University of Michigan staff, he was a member of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cincinnati.
