Former UCSB student Taylor Coffman is a self-made scholar. For thirty years, he has been functioning, as he likes to put it, as "an accidental archivist, a historian by default." His main subjects of study have focused on William Randolph Hearst and San Simeon. Recently he collaborated with Will Hearst, grandson of "the old man himself," to develop a symposium entitled "Hearst, Marion Davies & the Film Industry" at the Huntington Library.
