Kyu Ho Youm joined the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and communication as the inaugural holder of the Jonathan Marshall First Amendment Chair in September after teaching at Arizona State University for eleven years. As a prolific communication law scholar, Youm has published more than eighty articles in a number of leading journalism and law journals in the U.S. and abroad since 1985. His law review articles on freedom of expression have been cited by American and foreign courts, including the House of Lords in Great Britain and the High Court of Australia. In addition, his media law research has often been used by U.S. and international lawyers in representing their clients in press freedom litigation. A member of the Communication Law Writers Group, Youm has been involved in writing Communication and the Law, a widely used media law college textbook in the U.S. He has been named one of seven scholars producing the “most promising” research in journalism and mass communication. Currently, he serves on the editorial boards of a dozen major law and communication journals in the U.S. and England. Youm received an MSL from Yale Law School and a PhD in journalism from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
