W. Joseph Campbell is a tenured associate professor in the School of Communication at American University in Washington, D.C. He joined the AU faculty in 1997, after more than 20 years as a newspaper and wire service reporter, a career that took him on assignments across North America and to West Africa, Asia, and Europe. Dr. Campbell earned his Ph.D. in mass communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997. He has since written four books, the most recent of which is The Year That Defined American Journalism: 1897 and the Clash of Paradigms
