Pascal Lamy has been the director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) since September 2005. He began his career at the French Inspection Generale des Finances and at the Treasury. He then became an adviser to Finance Minister Jacques Delors, and subsequently to Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy. From 1985-1994, Mr. Lamy was chief of staff for the president of the European Commission, Jacques Delors, and G7 Sherpa. In November 1994, he joined the team in charge of rescuing the French bank, Credit Lyonnais, and later became CEO of the bank until its privatization in 1999. From 1999-2004, Mr. Lamy was European commissioner for trade. He then spent a short sabbatical period as president of "Notre Europe," a think tank working on European integration.
