Baroness Hale was the first woman to join the British House of Lords as a "Lord of Appeal in Ordinary" in 2004.
In 1984 she was the first woman to be appointed a member of the Law Commission, where she oversaw a number of important family law reforms.
She graduated from Girton College, University of Cambridge and taught law at Manchester University from 1966 to 1984.
