Nicholas practises in the general field of public law, particularly in the fields of personal liberty, discrimination and human, economic and social rights. He has a special prominence in the field of immigration, asylum and European free movement law, where he has appeared in many of the leading cases of the past ten years. He also practices in the related fields of criminal, civil and international law. His criminal experience includes acting in a number of the celebrated miscarriage of justice cases, criminal trials, appellate and judicial review work in this area, including death penalty cases. He has conducted constitutional and criminal cases in the Caribbean, Fiji, Hong Kong SAR and before the Privy Council. He has substantial experience before international tribunals, including the European Court of Human Rights, the European Court of Justice, the Inter American Commission of Human Rights (Washington DC) and the Inter American Court of Human Rights (Costa Rica).
