Amanda Baker is currently the Project Manager for Frontiers for Young Minds - a scientific journal written for, and reviewed by, kids ages 8-15. She also serves as the science writer for the Frontiers for Young Minds companion blog on the Scientific American Blog Network. She started her academic career at Bucknell University where she triple-majored in geology, psychology, and German. She followed her passion for geology to Cornell University, completing her PhD in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Her dissertation work on seismic and surface deformation records on hyperarid alluvial fans included multiple field seasons in the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. While at Cornell, Amanda also created and taught a first-year writing seminar on sustainable Earth systems and became national event supervisor for the new GeoLogic Mapping event for National Science Olympiad. She joined Frontiers in December 2012 and served as the Program Manager for the Humanities and Social Science program before becoming Project Manager for Frontiers for Young Minds.
