Biography

Lorry Lokey grew up in Portland, Oregon, during the Great Depression, and took his earliest lessons on the value of money and the importance of sharing from his parents. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II before attending Stanford University, where he earned a degree in journalism in 1949. His work for newspapers and in public relations led him in 1961 to start Business Wire, a news release distribution service. He sold the company to Berkshire Hathaway in 2006. For decades, Lorry has focused his philanthropy on education, making gifts to institutions such as Stanford, Mills College and University of Oregon, as well as to the elementary school he attended in Portland, and to seven universities, a high school and a hospital in Israel.
