Biography

Matthew Mullenweg is the founding developer of WordPress, the Open Source software used by over 22% of the web, including this site. Mullenweg used to do consulting and go to school in Houston, then moved to San Francisco where he worked at CNET Networks. Mullenweg left in late 2005 to found a company called Automattic, which is the secret force behind WordPress.com, Akismet, Gravatar, VaultPress, IntenseDebate, Polldaddy, and more. Automattic’s sites reach over a billion people every month, making it one of the largest sites with the smallest team in the world. Though Automattic is his main focus he also advises and invests in startups through Audrey Capital. He donates to charities or organizations working on basic survival issues and more modern technological problems: Archive.org, Alaska Wilderness League, Apache Foundation, Bay Lights, charity: water, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Grist (board), Innocence Project, Long Now Foundation, Rothko Chapel, Samasource, US-Ireland Alliance.
