Biography

Residential architect Michelle Kaufmann is committed to making beautiful, sustainable design accessible to everyone. She is cofounder of Vannevar Technology, which is developing a methodology and suite of collaborative cloud-based software tools for architects and engineers to manage the full complexity of designing site-adapted, high-performance, and healthy buildings. Vannevar was born out of Google’s moonshot factory Google X. The founding team sought a radical solution to reduce the environmental footprint of buildings, while simultaneously addressing rising demand for durable, sustainable buildings driven by rapid urbanization. Kaufmann has been called “the Henry Ford of green homes” by the Sierra Club, and her eco-friendly prefab structures have been showcased at the Walker Art Center, the LA Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, where a fully functioning “Smart Home”—a collaboration with wired—was visited by nearly half a million people. Her eponymous company, Michelle Kaufmann Studio, was named the nation’s top firm by Residential Architect magazine. She details her vision of thoughtful, sustainable design in her book Prefab Green.
