Mario Monti, chairman of the board of Bruegel, is also president of Bocconi University in Milan. Additionally, he currently serves as an international advisor to Goldman Sachs International, and as a member of the Research Advisory Council of the Goldman Sachs Global Markets Institute. Previously, Mr. Monti was the former European commissioner responsible for the internal market, financial services and financial integration, customs and taxation (1995-1999) and later for competition (1999-2004). Before joining the Commission, he was a professor at Bocconi, working mainly in monetary economics, central banking, fiscal policy and European integration. Mr. Monti has been a member of various committees, including the Italian Treasury Committee on Banking Law Reform and the Roll Committee on the Independence of the Bank of England. Additionally, he founded several research institutions including the Paolo Baffi Centre for Monetary and Financial Economics in 1985 and IGIER (Innocenzo Gasparini Institute of Economic Research in 1989. From 1989 to 1994, he was Rector of Bocconi University, and has been its president since 1994.
