Emilie Gordenker received her doctorate from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University in 1998. Emilie has lectured and published extensively on her specialty - dress in the Netherlands of the seventeenth century and Anthony van Dyck. Her dissertation, Van Dyck and the Representation of Dress in Seventeenth-Century Portraiture was published by Brepols Publishers in 2001.
In New York, she worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection and the Netherlands Institute for Art History in New York; and taught at Rutgers University, New York University, Vassar College and the Bard Graduate Center for the Decorative Arts. She moved to London in 1999, where she continued to publish on her areas of interest, but also worked for companies delivering new media programmes for museums.
Emilie Gordenker joined the National Gallery of Scotland in December 2003 as Senior Curator, Early Netherlandish, Dutch and Flemish Art. In January 2008, she became Director of the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
