Biography

The Honorable Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) is a current U.S. Representative for Illinois’s 8th congressional district. Representative Duckworth previously served as assistant secretary of veterans affairs in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009 to 2011 and as director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs from 2006 to 2009. Representative Duckworth served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot, suffered severe combat wounds during the Iraq War, and was awarded a Purple Heart for her injuries. Representative Duckworth received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Hawaii and Master of Arts degree in international affairs from George Washington University. Representative Duckworth has resumed her Ph.D. studies in political science at Northern Illinois University is also working toward a Ph.D. in health and human services at Capella University.
