FORA.tv Speaker - Valyncia Hawkins
Valyncia O. Hawkins, a former DCPS student, is a fifth grade teacher at Beers Elementary School. She is a member of Beers’ Leadership Team and currently serves as the Washington Teachers Union school representative, and a Teacher Lead. Valyncia has taught first, fourth, fifth and sixth grades; all at Beers. She once served as the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics resource teacher for grades pre-K through fifth, also during her 19 years at Beers. During the past two summers, Valyncia facilitated the DC Area Writing Project Summer Institute for teachers at Howard University. In addition, she spent three years as a facilitator for the NASA Explorer Schools. She received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communication and Theater from Chatham College. After graduation, she served four years in the U.S. Army. Following her service, she worked as a graphics specialist for the Institute for Defense Analyses, a federally funded research development center. While working at the Institute for Defense Analyses, she received a Publications Specialist Certificate from George Washington University.
Valyncia entered teaching via Teach for America, and later earned her Master of Education in Communication and Instruction from National-Louis University. In January, Valyncia was recognized as a 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award winner. Valyncia has also been selected as a 2013 Citybridge-NewSchools Innovation Fellow. She is designing and will lead a blended learning pilot program for grades three through five during the summer of 2013. Furthermore, she will implement her program at her school during 2013-2014 school year. Valyncia also regularly volunteers in libraries, schools and recreation centers teaching DC Hand Dancing, to dancers of all ages.
