Maria del Pilar O’Cadiz completed undergraduate studies at Oberlin College and earned a M.Ed. in Curriculum, Administration, and Teaching, M.A in Latin American Studies, and a Ph.D. in Social Sciences and Comparative Education at UCLA. She received the Comparative and International Education Society’s Gail Kelly Outstanding Dissertation Award and published her dissertation work in a coauthored book, Education and Democracy: Paulo Freire, Social Movements and Educational Reform in São Paulo. She has taught at Pacific Oaks College, Antioch University, Cal State Fullerton, and Cal Poly Pomona. As the director of a community based organization serving Latino immigrant youth in East Los Angeles, O’Cadiz became passionate about the transformative potential of afterschool settings for diverse youth, building their sense of efficacy, positive identity and civic responsibility. This experience lead her into a professional path working eight years coordinating the Collaborative After School Project out of UC Irvine and later Cal Poly Pomona, providing technical assistance to afterschool programs throughout LA County. Currently as a Project Scientist, at the University of California, Irvine, Dr. O’Cadiz conducts research focused primarily in the out-of-school time field. She also serves on the boards of two youth serving organizations, WriteGirl and Living Histories and a proposed charter high school, La Escuela Freire.
