Damian Fernandez, director of the Cuban Research Institute and professor of international relations, and Patricia Price, professor of geography, are the primary investigators of "Comparative Latinization: Civic and Place Engagement in Three Latino Enclave Neighborhoods in Transition," a two-year project that began in January 2005. Funded by a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, the study analyzes civic engagement and use of public spaces in Latin neighborhoods in three American cities: Miami, Chicago, and Phoenix.
The Cuban Research Institute at FIU is the lead institution in this three-city study that includes Arizona State University and the University of Notre Dame as research partners. FIU's component of the project examines the transition that is occurring in East Little Havana as Cubans are replaced by Central American immigrants, and as affluent Cuban Americans begin a process of gentrification. The study employs survey research, interviews, focus groups, and a Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis.
