Kay Bailey Hutchison is the senior U.S. Senator from Texas, currently serving her third term. She is the ranking member on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and is a member of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration. In 2012, Senator Hutchison was unanimously elected chairman of the Board of Visitors at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, having previously served as chairman twice. In 2011, Senator Hutchison announced that she would not run for re-election in 2012, opting instead to retire after completing her third term in the Senate.
Senator Hutchison began her political career in state politics. In 1972, she won a seat in the Texas legislature, becoming its first Republican woman, and went to Washington in 1976 for a top job at the National Transportation Safety Board. She returned to Texas in 1978 and became a small business owner while remaining active in Republican politics, eventually being elected Texas state treasurer in 1990. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in a special election in June 1993, making her the first—and, to date, the only—woman elected to represent Texas in the Senate. In 2000, she and several colleagues co-authored Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate, and she has subsequently authored American Heroines: The Spited Women Who Shaped Our Country as well as Leading Ladies: American Trailblazers. She earned both her BA and JD from the University of Texas. Senator Hutchison lives in Dallas with her husband and their two adopted children.
