Professor Rakove's research interests are primarily concerned with the intersection between politics and political thought during the era of the American Revolution, and with the role of historical thinking in contemporary constitutional disputes. In 1997, he received the Pulitzer Prize for history for his book Original Meanings: Politics and Ideas in the Making of the Constitution. The following year, he testified during the House Judiciary Committee hearings on impeachment. In 1999, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
