Biography

Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese is founder and executive director of Save the Mothers (STM) International, an organization dedicated to saving some of the 525,000 mothers who die in childbirth every year. She is also a long-time member of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada. Dr. Chamberlain is the FIGO Saving Mothers and Newborns technical expert for the Uganda project and since 1999 has been very involved in the FIGO projects. She was one of the first SOGC members to co-chair the International Women's Health Committee and was very active in developing the IWH program.

Dr. Chamberlain is also an active professional in the efforts to reduce maternal mortality. Living with her family in Uganda for most of the year, Dr. Chamberlain founded Save the Mothers, an innovative public health leadership program that trains societal leaders in various disciplines to understand why women are dying, and then to impact their particular sphere of influence, such as media, education, law and others. During her career advocating for safe motherhood, Dr. Chamberlain has also worked for several years in Yemen, in addition to working shorter terms in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Congo and Pakistan.

In 2006 she was awarded an International Community Service Award from the Federation of International Obstetricians/Gynecologists for her outstanding contribution to the health of mothers around the world.
