With her first book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, which hits the shelves March 11, and her accompanying website, Lean In, Facebook's board member and COO Sheryl Sandberg wants nothing less than to change the way America thinks about how and why women advance in the workplace.
Since she began speaking out on the subject (her 2010 TED talk created quite a stir), she has been one of the leading thinkers on the glass ceiling and the difficult choices between work and motherhood. "I do believe in women and men having both a successful career and family," she has said. "The more women we get into positions of power, the more likely we'll get that."
Sandberg's views are part of a much larger debate that includes other notable women, namely Anne-Marie Slaughter, whose Atlantic magazine article, Why Women Still Can't Have It All), counters many of Sandberg's ideas.
