The conversation marks the publication of the new book, Def Jam Recordings, which looks at the first 25 years of the ground breaking record label.
The sold out event can be viewed via a free live stream on the FORA.tv website at: http://fora.tv/live/nypl/def_jam_simmons. Following the live stream, the event can be viewed for free on demand at FORA.tv.
Def Jam Recordings is a comprehensive history of the first major hip-hop label. Founded by Russell ‘Rush’ Simmons and Rick Rubin in 1984, the label’s first office was Rubin’s New York University dorm room. Def Jam led the way in transforming hip-hop from a projects-based art form to a popular phenomenon. Def Jam is responsible for launching and sustaining the careers of musicians such as Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Public Enemy and The Beastie Boys. Both Simmons and Rubin have now left Def Jam to pursue successful careers in and away from music; but their creative legacy remains at the heart of the label's modern-day identity.
FORA.tv will present this live video broadcast in partnership with the New York Public Library’s 'LIVE from the NYPL' public programs. Curated by director Paul Holdengräber, 'LIVE from the NYPL' offers provocative conversations, real debates, and inspiring conversations.
