Victoria B. Mars, Member, Board of Directors
Mars is a diverse, successful, global business that employs more than 72,000 Associates in 74 countries, and produces and markets some of the world's most iconic brands. Four generations of visible and active family leadership have built a culture rooted in Five Principles-- Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom. Associates at Mars understand the importance of consistently abiding by the Principles and how everyone benefits from being part of a principles-led business. The fact that Associates embed the Principles into every action and decision they make is at the core of Mars' success.
In her keynote address, Victoria Mars will share her own beliefs on how all Associates have a better chance of thriving when they feel respected, needed and appreciated. She will also provide insight into how Mars engages with its Associates through a culture of mutual respect empowering them to take responsibility for making a difference in both their own working environment and the communities in which they live. It is Victoria's belief that you can combine this more egalitarian culture with the sense of responsibility and passionate spirit that has underscored Mars' success.
Victoria B. Mars
Victoria B. Mars is a member of the Mars, Incorporated Board of Directors. She is a fourth generation member of the Mars family whose great-grandfather, Frank C. Mars, founded the company in 1911.
For thirty five years, Victoria has held various roles throughout the company, beginning in 1978 in Haguenau, France, where she first served as Assistant Brand Manager for MILKY WAY® and later as Export Manager. After receiving her MBA in 1984, she joined Mars Electronics International, which at the time was the leading global manufacturer of unattended payment systems, as the Director of their Marine Systems Division. In 1986, Victoria transferred to Dove, International as Vice President of S&F, Commercial, and People and Organization in Burr Ridge, Illinois.
In 1997, Victoria took on a brand new challenge as Mars’ first Ombudsman. Armed with her commitment to Associates and making Mars a great place to work, she educated herself and the organization about what a best- in-class ombudsman program delivers. She then proceeded to create a structure and build a team. For the last 16 years, that team has provided Associates with the opportunity to address work-related issues with a neutral third party in a confidential and informal manner.
Victoria has been a member of the Mars Board of Directors since 2006 and currently serves as Chairman of the Board’s Remuneration Committee and a member of the Benefit Funding & Investment Oversight Committee.
Outside of the business, Victoria is currently a member of the Boards of Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia, and The Center for Large Landscape Conservation in Bozeman, Montana.
Victoria graduated from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree in administrative sciences and German and French languages and holds a master’s degree in finance from the Wharton School of Business.
She is a cat lover who enjoys the mountains, traveling, skiing, cycling, hiking, and creating family photo albums.
