James L. Madara, MD, is currently serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Medical Association, Dr. Madara is an accomplished academic medical center physician, medical scientist, and administrator. He is an authority on epithelial cell biology and on gastrointestinal disease.
Dr. Samuel Nussbaum is Executive Vice President, Clinical Health Policy, and Chief Medical Officer for WellPoint, Inc. He is the key spokesperson and policy advocate for WellPoint and is responsible for the company’s public health policy programs. He oversees corporate medical and pharmacy policy and clinical quality programs to ensure the provision of proven effective care. Dr. Nussbaum also has responsibility for HealthCore, WellPoint’s clinical outcomes research subsidiary. Dr. Nussbaum collaborates with industry leaders, physicians, hospitals and national policy and health care organizations to shape an agenda for quality, safety and clinical outcomes and to improve patient care for WellPoint’s 36 million medical members nationwide. In addition, Dr. Nussbaum works closely with WellPoint business units to advance innovative health care services strategies.
Dr. Kavita Patel
Dr. Kavita Patel is the Managing Director of Clinical Transformation at the Engelberg Center for Healthcare Reform. Dr. Patel leads research on delivery system reform, healthcare financing, physician payment reform, and healthcare workforce development. Dr. Patel is also a practicing primary care physician at Johns Hopkins Medicine and a clinical instructor at UCLA's Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Patel was previously a Director of Policy for The White House under President Obama and a senior advisor to the late Senator Edward Kennedy. Her prior research in healthcare quality and community approaches to mental illness have earned national recognition and she has published numerous papers and book chapters on healthcare reform and health policy. She has testified before Congress several times and she is a frequent guest expert on CBS, NBC and MSNBC as well as serving on the editorial board of Health Affairs.
