Dr. David H. Newman
David H. Newman is a practicing physician at Mt. Sinai, where he also teaches and serves as director of clinical research in the department of emergency medicine. He has emerged as a leading voice for change in our health care system, and a critic of reform efforts that focus on cost reduction. The real problem, he argues in his book Hippocrates’ Shadow: Secrets from the House of Medicine, is a dysfunctional medical culture whose goals and interests are often at odds with those of patients. An advocate for evidence-based medicine, Newman co-created TheNNT.com, a website that summarizes research data on the effectiveness of therapies and diagnostics in a way that is broadly accessible and understandable. As a major in the Army Reserves in 2005, Newman served with a combat support hospital in Baghdad, for which he received an Army Commendation Medal.
