Pregnancy is filled with a landscape of emotions, from excitement to wonder to concern, and it seems that everyone has advice on what to do and what not to. In this 60-minute conversation, clinicians and a genetic counselor from Boston, Atlanta and San Francisco will discuss an array of healthy prenatal tips to help ease the mind of those trying to get pregnant about what to anticipate in that first trimester and what are the important aspects of early maternal care.
Known as “Nurse Barb”, joined Women Physicians in 1991. Nurse Barb is known throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, where she appears regularly on ABC TV’s View from the Bay as a health expert. Barb is a graduate of Boston College, earning a BS in Nursing. She worked in Pediatric Intensive Care at Stanford University for 8 years. Barb earned a Masters Degree as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner from the University of California, San Francisco and practiced in a free clinic before joining Women Physicians. She is a popular guest lecturer in the Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner program at Stanford University. She also founded Blue Orchid Press, which produces innovative and award winning Personal Guides to Health that have been read by over 3.5 million women on topics ranging from Fertility to Pregnancy and Menopause.
Dr. Fairbrother has been Chief of Medical Staff at Northside Hospital since 2010 and prior to that was Chair of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department from 2007-2009. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wellesley College in 1988. She stayed in Boston and received both her Medical Degree and her Masters in Public Health from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Fairbrother completed her residency at Emory University School of Medicine where she was Administrative Chief Resident. She joined Obstetrics and Gynecology of Atlanta in 1996. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Jennifer Schmidt, M.S. is a certified and licensed genetic counselor who is currently employed as a Medical Science Liaison with Ariosa Diagnostics. She has spent over ten years working in the field of prenatal genetics, holding previous positions as a clinical genetic counselor at the Prenatal Diagnosis Center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Wolfberg is the associate director of medical affairs at Ariosa Diagnostics, and he is a practicing maternal-fetal medicine physician who specializes in prenatal diagnosis and prevention of recurrent preterm delivery. He is also on the Harvard Medical School faculty. His clinical research on fetal EKG analysis has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, and he has published over 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
