Anu Bhagwati is the executive director of Service Women’s Action Network, an advocacy organization dedicated to securing equal opportunity for women to serve in uniform without the threat of harassment, discrimination, intimidation, or assault, and to securing exceptional healthcare and equal benefits for all service members, veterans, and their families. A former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, Ms. Bhagwati has testified before Congress, advised the White House and the United Nations, and has spoken to audiences on challenges faced by military women. A regular contributor to the media, she has been featured on programs on CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and the BBC, and also in print in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek, and Time. Ms. Bhagwati, who was selected in 2010 as a Petra Fellow, holds a BA in English from Yale University and an MPP from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government where she focused on international human rights policy.
Nancy Cook covers economic and domestic policy for National Journal and also serves as the lead writer for Next Economy, a joint project of the National Journal and The Atlantic. Prior to this, she covered economic and fiscal policy for National Journal for more than two years, leading the policy coverage of all of D.C.'s major budget battles. She's also worked as a senior editor at Fast Company and a staff writer at Newsweek, based in New York.
Dr. Karina Edmonds
Karina Edmonds was appointed the technology transfer coordinator for the Department of Energy in April 2010 by Secretary Steven Chu. She is responsible for working with the Department’s National Laboratories to accelerate the process of moving discoveries from the lab to the private sector, ensuring that America’s scientific leadership translates into new high-paying jobs for U.S. families. An aeronautical engineer, Dr. Edmonds was previously at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California where she managed the patent portfolio and licensed technologies developed at the laboratory to industry and start-up companies. Dr. Edmonds holds a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Rhode Island and earned her Ph.D. in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology.
Anu Baghwati recalls the outside-the-box thinking that put women marines in the primary role of interfacing with local communities in Afghanistan. Baghwati says that women were more effective at breaking down the barriers of cultural norms than their male counterparts.
