If you were a little ant living on a wire in one dimension, there would be only one possible move in your universe : you would go forward, forever. For an external observer however, seeing the scene from above, the movement of the ant takes two possible forms (or topologies) -- it can be linear, or cyclic. It cannot be anything else, only linear or cyclic.
Not surprisingly, the human apprehension of Time has always been oscillating between those two visions. Does Time go on linearly forward or does it comes back to itself cyclically, forever ?
In this talk we will review the scientific paradigm about Time from Einstein’s Relative Time, Bergson’s notion of simultaneity and duration, to Quantum Mechanics Time/Energy duality. Does the ``Arrow Time’’ of the Scientist exist? If so, ``where’’ did God ``draw’’ this Arrow? Does Non Dual Time exist? If so, how can Time be One moment only, and at the same time an Arrow?
We will see that at the smallest scales, in the world of the microcosm, Time doesn’t flow. All the microscopic equations of physics are reversible. The Arrow of Time emerges only with the ``Many’’ at the macroscale, when particles start to interact with each other, to rub against one another in a thermodynamic friction. Entropy, friction, are thus lying at the heart of any notion of Evolutionary Emergence. A deep contemplation of the nature of Change, however, can convince us that it is strongly constrained by the presence of Invariant Laws, of simple Truths, valid at any scale of observation. Those Thruths act like the skleton of Evolution, its DNA. They are context-transcendant. In this way, Simplicity and Complexity are entangled in the evolutionary Telos, and in their intrication maybe lies the secret fabrics of life.
SAND 2011 is a journey and exploration of the nature of awareness
from the perspective of modern science, ancient traditions, philosophy,
phenomenology, psychology and direct experience. Hear presentations of
world-renowned quantum physicists, scientists, lecturers and authors
like John Hagelin, Stanislav Grof, Lynne McTaggart, Fred Alan Wolf,
Menas Kafatos, Gangaji, Rupert Spira, David Peat, Dean Radin, Llewellyn
Vaughan-Lee, Jeff Foster and many more, over this four-day
The theme which we will be exploring this year is Time. What is time
and does it really exist? Linear, nonlinear time, eternal now,
infinity… SAND 2011 will be an exploration of the concept and paradox of
time from the perspective of modern science, ancient traditions,
philosophy, phenomenology, psychology and of course direct experience.
Catherine Pepin Ph.D.
Catherine is a French theoretical physicist working in the field of Quantum Emergent phenomena. Quantum Field theory, complexity and emergence are the key words of this research where quantum physics, originally designed to describe the realm of the microcosm, is found to emerge at the macroscopic scale in the form of very mysterious and spectacular phenomena.
Catherine obtained her PhD from the University of Grenoble and the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (France), in 1996. From 1996 to 1998 she was a post doctorate research fellow at MIT (USA), followed by two years at Brasenose College, Oxford University (UK). Since 2001, she is permanent research scientist at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Saclay, France. Author of more than 50 scientific publications in Quantum Field Theory and Condensed Matter Physics, she is a Leader Research Scientist of her institution since 2007.
In 2005, she received a strong spiritual call which told with no doubt that in addition to the wonders of Scientific endeavour, there is an unmistakable Otherness, a presence impalpable to the mind. Her spiritual quest thus started in June 2006 with the meeting of late Stephen Jourdain'. During the year 2007, she went through a Shamanic initiation involving Iboga and Ayahuasca, the African and South Amazon sacred plants known to open doors of the Spirit. She met spiritual teacher Andrew Cohen in march 2008 and since then is a student of his teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment.
She believes the spiritual call received in 2005, while she was still a fundamentally materialistic scientist, was not an accident . It was an experience of a universal longing in the human Soul for a deep and uncompromising re-union of Science and Spirit.
