Former Malaysian leader Anwar Ibrahim's trial for sodomy has been heard amidst major controversy and strong allegations that the whole thing is a politically motivated setup.
In his new biography of former Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir, journalist Barry Wain argues that modern Malaysia is in a state of political crisis, and that the ruling UMNO party needs to urgently address issues of corruption and nepotism in order to regain international credibility.
Barry Wain has lived in the South-East Asian region for almost 40 years. He was the editor of the Asian Wall Street Journal, and is now the writer-in-residence at the South East Asian Studies Centre in Singapore. His most recent book is Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times.
