Eija Ailasmaa has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Sanoma Magazines since 2003.
Eija Ailasmaa played an important part in the creation of the new company, which built on, and extended, SanomaWSOYâ€™s existing magazine business, Helsinki Media, which she has been responsible for since 2000. Eija Ailasmaa was appointed Executive Vice President of Sanoma Magazines, the new parent company of the business, and took over as Acting President in 2002.
A graduate of the University of Helsinki, with a Master's degree in social sciences, Eija Ailasmaa pursued Journalism in an early stage in her career. She joined Ilta-Sanomat, Finland's largest quality tabloid and a SanomaWSOY newspaper, in 1975 and stayed with the title for 10 years, holding a number of editorial positions.
Her introduction to the world of magazines came in 1985, when Eija Ailasmaa became Editor-in-Chief for Kodin Kuvalehti, a family magazine with one of the highest circulations in its category in Finland. She steered the magazine through the latter part of the 1980s until 1989, when she took up a position as Vice President, publishing with Sanomaprint and Helsinki Media.
Over the years, the magazine world continued to inspire Eija Ailasmaa, and her growing experience in the business saw her appointed General Manager at Helsinki Media in 1998, taking over as CEO in 2000. She remained CEO of Sanoma Magazines Finland, as the business is now known, until 2002, when her responsibilities at the parent company, Sanoma Magazines, demanded her full attention.
Eija Ailasmaa is a member of the Management Board of the Huhtamaki Group, a global leader in consumer packaging.
