Dr Wilmot James is Executive Director of the Africa Genome Education Institute. He is an Honorary Professor in the Division of Genetics, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town and in the Department of Sociology, University of Pretoria. He is Chairman of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and a Trustee of the Ford Foundation of New York, the US-SA Center for Leadership and Public Values and the Cape Times Bursary Trust. He is a non-executive director of Sanlam Limited, Media24 and the Grape Company of Paarl.
Dr James holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1982) and is the author or editor of 14 books, the most recent being Biotechnology & Health: South Africaâ€™s Aspirations (with Jo Chataway eds.), South Africaâ€™s Nobel Laureates (with Kader Asmal & David Chidester eds.), What Holds us Together: Social Cohesion in South Africa (with David Chidester & Philip Dexter eds.) and Nelson Mandela: From Freedom to the Future (with Kader Asmal & David Chidester, eds.).
